Florence Melton: The Woman Who Made Slippers a Household Staple

Early Life & Entrepreneurial Spark

Born in Philadelphia in 1911, Florence Zacks grew up during the Great Depression and learned the value of durable goods early on. By 13 she was already working retail; at 19 she married salesman Aaron Zacks and moved to Columbus, Ohio, where the couple would eventually co-found R.G. Barry Corporation.

From Shoulder Pads to House Shoes

While experimenting with surplus wartime materials, Florence noticed that foam rubber—then used in bra padding and military gear—could cushion feet just as well. Her first prototype combined a washable cotton knit upper with a feather-light foam sole. It was comfort no ordinary felt slipper could match.

The Birth of Dearfoams

In 1947 the couple launched “Angel Treads,” soon re-branded as Dearfoams®. Department stores sold out within weeks; post-war consumers craved cozy, affordable luxuries for new suburban homes. Florence’s design let slippers go straight into the washing machine—unheard of at the time—while the foam insole bounced back after every wear.

Fun fact: Dearfoams have shipped over one billion pairs worldwide since 1947.

How Foam Changed an Industry

  • Mass adoption → Competing brands pivoted from stiff felt to pliable foams by the 1960s.
  • Wash-and-wear care → Melton’s washable concept set new hygiene standards for indoor footwear.
  • Female inventorship → Florence became an inspiration for women in manufacturing, later receiving multiple innovation awards.

Sustainability & Modern Materials

Today’s eco-foams use plant-based oils, while premium makers like CP Slippers favor full-grain vegetable-tanned leather—breathable, repairable and biodegradable—aligned with Melton’s original focus on longevity.

What Makes a Quality Slipper Today?

  1. Breathable natural uppers (leather, wool) to reduce odor.
  2. Structured footbeds with arch support—far beyond flat foam.
  3. Ethical production and traceable materials.

Melton’s Legacy & CP Slippers

Florence retired in the 1980s but remained an R&D consultant while launching the Melton Adult Mini-School for Jewish studies. Her ethos—comfortable design that lasts—mirrors the philosophy behind every pair of CP Slippers crafted in Spain since 1981.
